Your Plans for National Library Week

No doubt, your plans are already in motion for celebrating National Library Week 2007. NLW this year is April 15-21 and the theme is “Come Together @ Your Library.” Amongst many programming ideas, you can also highlight 2 special days during that week: “National Library Workers’ Day” and “Support Teen Literature Day.” Read all about it on ALA’s website, where you’ll find scads of promotional materials, press releases, posters, bookmarks, prizes and more: http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/natlibraryweek/nlw.htm

And while you’re at it, how about blogging your plans for National Library Week with your Northwest colleagues? Please contribute your ideas here and share the fun!

Our theme will be "You CAN @ the library" or something like that. We are going to do a drive for the local food pantry. We will play off the "can" in the title, but not limit donations to canned goods. For every item donated we will delete fines. I am thinking the amount per item will probably be 50 cents in fines or maybe 25.
I checked with the food pantry to see what they needed. Canned veggies are not something they need but I did get a list of other items to work from. I am thinking about giving more credit for certain items, especially those that might cost more or those that are really needed. We will put an article in the local newspaper, post it on our website and put flyers up in the library.
This is not an original idea, but sounded like something good to do for the community. I liked that.

For the past several years we have done an Open House all week for National Library Week. The Library Board and Staff bring cookies/bars and we have lemonade and coffee. We also have a book drawing for the 2007 Newbery book, 2007 Caldecott Book and the 2007 All-Iowa Reads book. The drawing is held on Thursday evening during our Family Night. This year we are having Lisa Laird from Orange City doing a program called "Pockets Full of Fun". We are also investing in a large newspaper ad with a picture of the staff and pictures of all of the programs/services we provide at the library.
