1) The Merry Month of May

Yes, the merry, merry month of May boasts Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and National Children’s Book Week. It’s also the official start to summertime fun with Memorial Day Weekend.

But May is also known for a variety of other

special occasions and recognitions. If you’re looking

for some display ideas, website fun facts, or news-

letter articles, then check out the promotional events

calendar at E-Promos.Com.

“…Holidays, national events, appreciation weeks and other special occasions are often great opportunities to promote your company or organization using promotional products and giveaways. High-profile events and occasions that are of specific importance to your audience make great promotional opportunities and increase the impact of your promotional marketing…””

Found on E-Promos.Com here are some more occasions and recognitions that May is known for. Each recognized month/week is hyperlinked to its own website. Pour more coffee, because it’s easy to while away some time here :-)

¨ Get Caught Reading Month

¨ Healthy Vision Month

¨ Clean Air Month

¨ National Foster Care Month

¨ Older Americans Month

¨ Salvation Army Week

¨ Food Allergy Awareness Week

¨ National Tourism Week

¨ National Police Week

2) What’s the Deal @ Laurens P.L.?

Glenda Mulder, Director of Laurens Public Library, reports that April was a month for the record books. Monthly circulation totaled 4,179 items checked out. That’s nearly one thousand higher than April ’09 and tops the previous high of 4,032 from October 2009. Laurens is in Pocahontas County; the town population is 1,476. Glenda can’t really attribute their record-breaking checkout numbers to any one thing, although National Library Week promotions no doubt played a part. In any case, congrats to Laurens PL staff: Deb, Nancy, Cathy, Janet, and Glenda for delivering an over-the-top month. And thanks for sharing your story!

3) Mythbusters @ Sioux City P.L.

Here’s a neat idea from Sioux City Public Library. Hoping to bust through some common misconceptions about library service, staff has added Mythbusters Q&A to their website. Customer questions are randomly popped onto the website each time the homepage is refreshed. Mouse-hovering over the question reveals whether the “myth” is actually true, plausible, or totally busted. Here are a few of the questions:

¨ My overdue fines must be a million dollars by now

¨ The library keeps every book forever

¨ Library cards are just for kids

¨ You have to pay for parking to use the library

¨ Library cards are good for scraping frost off the windshield

Neat idea…learn more at Sioux City Public Library’s website— what they call their online branch! www.siouxcitylibrary.org

4) Meetings and Events This Week

School and public library staff who have not ventured into online classes yet are welcome to join us this week—Tuesday May 11—from 3:15-4:15PM—Northwest Library Services and Northwest AEA are partnering to provide orientations to Adobe Connect Classrooms. Adobe Connect is the product we’re currently using to provide online training.

This is fun and informal—and a proven way to become acquainted with the Adobe Classroom before taking a real class for real credit. I’ll step through some of the classroom features, as well as offer some tips for making online learning a positive experience.

Pam Buysman at Northwest AEA writes “…We’re not requiring pre-registration, but it would be helpful to know how many people will be participating. You can register online at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dFZsc25TeG12eDVTS0VuWm9jVjRaMXc6MQ

Note this is a repeat from last week. The time 3:15-4:15PM is for the convenience of school library staff, but again, public library staff are encouraged to attend. Below is the link to the Adobe Room we’ll be using. In the “GUEST” box, please type your name and come on in!
